"Pedophiles" in the News

I plan on sharing information about pedophiles on this page: news articles; links to more academic articles I think are important; statistics about incidence, recidivism, and cures (no cure yet, unfortunately); and any other information I think might shed light on the problem of pedophilia.

Solutions? I don't have any. I wish I did.

Articles about "Pedophiles"

First, an explanation for the quotation marks around the word "pedophiles" in the title of this page and in this section with articles about "pedophiles." Not all articles that use the label "pedophile" are using it correctly, and this error is one of my pet peeves. (Read the left column of this page to find out why.)

Second, whether or not the label is used correctly, it's often misapplied - through sloppiness, as in the article referred to below, or ignorance, and even malice, and once people, men or women, are labeled as pedophiles, they may never lose that label. In effect, their lives are forever changed.

As well, the British scandal about a long-established pedophile ring and its most famous member demonstrates that even if you didn't originate the libel, and you simply repeat it, you may be subject to a lawsuit (this is not new law, by the way.) Watch what you repeat or tweet.

"Lord McAlpsine, former Tory party treasurer, is taking on folks who think they can put innocent people on ‘trial by Twitter.’ He’s ticked and it seems he has a good reason."

What is Pedophilia?

"If you don't define the problem,

you can't solve it." (Me)

Every time I read an article that labels Sandusky - or the high school teacher who has an affair with student, or the store owner who uses his power over his teenaged employees to sexually harass them - as a pedophile, I want to scream.

Why?

I'm not saying these people aren't vile, nor that they don't cause great damage to their victims, but they are NOT pedophiles.

Elements of Pedophilia

1. A pedophile is almost always a male, 16 years or older (that's right - when women sexually abuse children, other factors, not pedophilia, are at play, e.g., greed (child pornography), a type of Battered Wife Syn- drome, sadism, and other psychoses.)

2. The victims are PREPUBESCENT CHILDREN, some as young as babies. At the least sign the child is going through puberty, the pedophile will lose interest. (For a definition of Ephebophilia, see Wikipedia.)

3. Pedophiles generally report an attraction to children of a particular age range, which may be as specific as within a range of only one or two years.

4. Pedophiles attracted to girls usually prefer eight-to-ten-year-olds, whereas those attrac- ted to boys usually prefer slightly older children, provided the victims are pre- pubescent.

5. Attraction to girls is apparently twice as common as attraction to boys.

6. Many pedophiles are sexually aroused by both boys and girls.

7. Some pedophiles are sexually attracted to teenagers and adults, as well as to pre- pubescent children.

8. The principal features of pedophilia are recurrent, intense, sexual urges and sexually arousing fantasies, of at least six months duration, involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child.

COMING IN LATE 2013 - ANGRY ENOUGH TO KILL
ONLY TWELVE YEARS?

A two-year-old girl? No remorse?

There's not much you can say about this light sentence without becoming very angry. This type of pedophile should be locked away permanently, would you agree?

A MilliON CLOSED EYES

In my novel, my 'heroines' listen to a fic- tional documentary called "A Million Closed Eyes," but the facts are based on a real case in Northern Ontario, where a pedophile abused countless young boys over a long period of time even though the townspeople knew, or ought to have known, that the man was a pedophile.

Why?

Because they called him "Two Dollar Bill." (At the time, Canada didn't have a two-dollar bill, but now it has a two-dollar coin, affectionately called the "toonie.")

You can close your eyes to abuse in dif- ferent ways. What about parents who refuse to allow their children to testify? Isn't this yet another way of closing your eyes to abuse? If charges cannot be laid due to lack of evidence, the pedophile remains 'on the street' and free to abuse more children.

Warning: This pedophile abused children ranging in age from 8 days old (yes, that's right - babies)  to 3 1/2 years old.

Read this report, and see what you think:

WILL TRACKING DEVICES PREVENT ABUSE?

Recently in Australia, a dangerous pedophile was fitted with a tracking device upon his release back in the community. Do you think this is adequate protection for our children?

What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?

COUPLE TRIES TO SAVE A CHILD

In this news story, a man and a woman planned to rob a pedophile and kidnap his daughter (whom he was abusing). They were caught, but the judge sentenced them very lightly.

Do you think the punishment was too light?

Do the ends - to save and protect a child - justify the means?
